Books

Below are the books that I have aquired while working on my Jeep. Books are my first source of information when I'm trying to figure out a new part of the car or a procedure that I have never done before. Of course a quick Google often works well too.

Reader's Digest Complete Care Care Manual
I was desperate one afternoon for information about my distributor and went to my local library. I wasn't expecting much because it is a SMALL library. But they had this book which turned out to be great. It covers every system of the car including emissions. It was printed in 1981 so it covers the technologies used in my Jeep. It starts with an overview of how it works and gets down into fine detail with great color 3D illustrations. This is a great book for a beginner who wants detailed information on how things work. I bought a copy of this book for myself so I don't have to keep checking out the library's.

Auto Fundamentals
This is an automotive class textbook (at a textbook price). It goes into the most detail on general theory of any of the books I have. It is constantly being revised and updated so it covers all of the latest technologies. This is great if your studying to be a mechanic to work on new cars. But it spends too much time covering the updated designs that weren't around when my Jeep was made. None the less, it's still a great reference book for learning the various systems.

Jeep Owner's Bible by Moses Ludel
I bought this book a couple of years ago when I first started thinking about working on the Jeep. It has a great section on the history of Jeeps. It is a good resource because it covers Jeep specific engines, transmissions, axels, body, etc. However it does not go into great detail on HOW to maintain and upgrade your Jeep. It is full of clear B&W photos, but has a poor index so finding info is tough. Mine is a '94 printing, but there are more up to date versions.

Haynes Jeep CJ
This is your basic Haynes repair manual. If you've seen one, you've seen them all. Somehow I ended up with two of these. It's a good reference for technical specs specific to Jeep CJs. The typos abound! The procedures are difficult to follow and sometimes just plain wrong. But it's better than not having anyting at all. I think it's slightly more userfull then the Chilton's manual below.

Chilton's Jeep CJ/Scrambler
Again, this is your basic Chilton's repair manual. Full of technical specs, but short on background information. Look elsewhere to learn HOW to do a procedure, then look here to adapt it to the Jeep. The images are not quite as clear as they Hayne's manual. But it is nice to have both the Hayne's and Chilton's manual so I can see if they agree on a topic, or if one covers it better than the other.
